Root Canals in Jamaica Plain, MA

A lot of people get worried when they think they may need a “root canal,” but not many people know exactly what the treatment is about.

Here at Pondside Dental Associates, we want to give you some more information about what a root canal treatment involves and what you can expect during the process.

What is a Root Canal?

Contrary to popular belief, the root canal is actually a part of the tooth – not the name of the operation that you undergo, which would technically be known as endodontic therapy.

The root canal itself is a hollow section that contains a lot of nerve tissue. There are some other cells that live there as well as blood vessels.

What Happens During Endodontic Therapy?

Usually, there are three steps that take place during endodontic therapy, more commonly known as a root canal.

First, the dentist has to get rid of any kind of diseased or dead tissue that is inside the tooth. This happens with the patient under local anesthesia by making a small hole on the tooth itself.

Next, the dentist takes care of that empty area that they just created. That involves cleaning the hole and decontaminating it from any “bad” germs or disease that might be leftover. The tooth gets filled with a rubber material so that the canals get sealed totally.

As a patient, you can expect not to feel any pain once the process is all over because the tooth is now dead, and there’s no nerve tissue leftover to even cause any pain.

The third step is to add a crown or filling to the tooth. Without this step, the tooth would become very weak over time and not stand up to the daily wear and tear of everyday life.

The good news is that most people are able to be treated in one appointment, although severe cases or cases that are complicated for some reason may take an extra appointment or two.
